What Works in Readmissions Reduction: How Hospitals Have Improved Performance

Presented by: Improvement Science Research Network

co-sponsored by: RHP 6 Readmission Collaborative

This research methods web seminar is made available to ISRN associates through collaboration with the

San Antonio Region Readmissions Learning Collaborative

The third webinar in the Wrestling Readmissions series will be held on November 18, 2015, as Amanda Brewster, PhD, offers insights into how hospitals across the U.S. are actively seeking to reduce readmissions but the evidence on how best to accomplish this goal is mixed. Dr. Brewster will discuss a prospective, survey-based study of nearly 500 hospitals as well as an in-depth comparison of hospitals where readmissions rates increased or decreased. While little evidence was found that specific clinical strategies led to improvements across hospitals, investing in several changes – tailored to local circumstances – seemed to be key to success. This discovery indicates that high performing hospitals shifted their organizational contexts in ways that supported readmissions reduction.
